Vocabulary Game Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Vocabulary Game - Research Paper Example II. Players: The participants are divided into two to four teams. Each team is divided into equal members. Ideally, each team should be composed of at least four members but not more than eight people in one group to make sure that each member are able to contribute and participate in the activity. III. Materials: white board (paper), markers (pens or pencils), whistle, and timer. IV. How to Play: First, the moderator/ teacher would provide the instructions of the game—each team would be given two minutes to list down as many words as they could think of per category mentioned. Then, the teams would have to wait for the signal from the moderator before they could proceed from writing. And once the category is given, the moderator would signal that the time had start by whistling. When the time is up, the moderator would whistle again and the participants would have to hold up their markers/pen to ensure that everyone had stopped writing. For instance, the category is â€Å"co ntinental breakfast† each team would then have to make a â€Å"menu list† of dishes that are considered to be continental breakfast—i.e. omelets, hash browns, French toasts, oatmeal, bagels. Categories could also work based on themes like ‘fruit-based dishes,’ ‘salads,’ ‘Mexican food,’ ‘pasta,’ ‘liquid form,’ any category that would inspire participants to think creatively and would invoke fun and humor to the game. This would make learning more interactive and enjoyable without the participants noticing that they are not only learning new words but they are also developing their socialization skills and confidence through interaction, team work and cooperation by working together as one group. V. Winner: To determine the winner, for each category, the moderator would have to check the list that each team had made for any errors and repetitions. The checking would be done by the moderator and the ot her teams to ensure transparency. The most number of items listed per category wins one point. Points are cumulative. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. VI. Variations: There are many variations that could be made to this game. Though the game is called â€Å"menu listing† modification could be made to fit required lesson. If for instance the lesson is about pronouns or synonyms/ antonyms, ask the participants to catalog pronouns or synonyms/antonyms of the given category. Menu Listing Game, an Analysis Vocabulary games are important learning tools for English Language Learners because it helps them get more acquainted with recognizable words and familiarize themselves with words that they do not often hear or use. Vocabulary improvement activities according to August, et al (2006), must include â€Å"both definitional information and contextual information about each word’s meaning, and that effective instruction actively involves students in word learning and provides multiple exposures to meaningful information about each word† (p. 97). Vocabulary games also develop the students’ knowledge with the various parts of speeches as it becomes the focal point of the game—through the categories, to which the game is played. For instance, since the topic of our discussion is noun/ pronoun I based the ‘menu listing game’

Discuss the microbial production of non Beta lactam antibiotics Assignment

Discuss the microbial production of non Beta lactam antibiotics - Assignment Example Actinomycetes are bound with bacteria in the same class of Schizomycetes but confined to the order Actinomycetales (Kumar et al., 2005). The actinomycetes are a group of bacteria which possess many important as well as interesting features. They have substantial value as producers of antibiotics and of other therapeutically useful compounds. They exhibit various ranges of life cycles which are unique among the prokaryotes and appear to play a major role in the cycling of organic matter in the soil ecosystem (Veigaet al., 1983). Thus it holds a prominent position due to their diversity and proven ability to produce new compounds, because discovery of novel antibiotic and non-antibiotic lead molecules through microbial secondary metabolite screening is becoming increasingly important. They are unicellular likewise bacteria, but they also produce mycelium which is non septate (coenocytic) and more slender, like true bacteria they do not have distinct cell wall and their cell wall is without chitin and cellulose (commonly present in the cell wall of fungi). Unlike slimy distinct colonies of true bacteria which grow quickly on culture media actinomycetescolonies show slow gowth, show powdery consistency and firmly stick to agar surface. They produce hyphae and conidia or sporangia like fungi. Some Actinomycetes whose hyphae undergo segmentation resembles bacteria, both by morphologically and physiologically. Actinomycetes are numerous and widely distributed in soil, compost etc and are next tobacteria in abundance. Plate count estimates gives value ranging from 10^4 to 10^8 per gram of soil. They are sensitive to acidity or low pH (optimum pH range is within 6.5 to 8.0) and waterlogged soil conditions. As we go deep into the soil, the population of actinomycetesincr eases. They are aerobic (requires oxygen), heterotrophic (cannot make its own food) and mesophilic (25-30Â ºC) organisms and some

Operation & Logistics Management Essay Example for Free

Operation Logistics Management Essay In modern world, the management of operations and logistics can represent the know-what, the know-how, and know-why of a company’s overall picture as well as its functional areas. Knowledge of the management is acquired by managers and employees, including analysts, by examining and investigating operations under study. This differs from the acquisition of specialized knowledge that is learned by performance over time. Usually, the management of operations and logistics is conducted by company personnel who possess a high level of skills in their field of work, for example, strategic planning, marketing, manufacturing, accounting and finance, and human resources. Besides, there are other company occupations that include some type of management work, directly or indirectly. The management of operations and logistics can therefore be defined as ‘‘the acquisition, creation, packaging, or application of knowledge’’ (Lesser 90). KANGPUT Technology Development Company has been increasingly, and heavily, influenced by economic theories of the firm; notably, developing management systems, selecting appropriate software that may be placed under the umbrella term of the â€Å"knowledge-based view of the firm†. KANGPUT Technology Development Company is based on customer satisfaction. This essay is based on KANGPUT Technology Development Company in China. This paper will consider how to use, maintain and control the knowledge effectively so the current management of operations and logistics of the organisation could be improved and have a better future overall. This work also covers the possible need for the director of KANGPUT Technology Development Company to accommodate changing knowledge work processes. An important part of developing operations and logistics management systems is selecting appropriate software, and therefore software selection is also discussed in the paper. Operations form the base of both multinational and small company, whether in manufacturing, service or non-profit organisations. Operations Management Logistics is a field that involves several subject disciplines such as product development, quality management, logistics, information systems and human resources management. Operations comprise beginning from the performance management of a group of design engineers to the exact forecast of production and delivery performance. People are the source of the ideas and actions that grow organizations. Yet the role of people and human capital has been changing in a fundamental way over the last several decades. Until recently, institutions have been the dominant part of the equation. As long as human inputs into wealth were seen as commodities, then people were interchangeable, one for another. Their contributions were marginal to the profits and practices of the company. As much as leadership proclaimed, â€Å"Our people are our most important resource,† very few organizations actually mobilized their people (Thierauf 32). A major challenge for the organisation is to engage and cultivate its networks of human capital (Bassett 35). In this era, the human capital that supports the company is only partially a group of direct employees. In fact, as time goes on, many organizations will operate with a core group of strategic leadership. The era where benign bureaucracies hired people to have jobs for life has come to an end. Instead, people will work in a number of organizations during their working lives and may have multiple engagements with a number of companies at the same time. People will increasingly begin to see themselves as companies of one, where they are responsible for their learning, their personal growth strategies, the quality of their relationships, and their work environment. As a result, a growing proportion of the people working with enterprises will be independent contractors, outsourced from other organizations, members of organizations with whom the enterprise has alliances. KANGPUT Technology Development Company raises these critical questions and lay the groundwork for establishing the kinds of frameworks, practices, and relationships that are necessary for any company to successfully navigate operations management logistics. KANGPUT Technology Development Company must to make organization that is nothing more than an extension of human thought and action, which makes human capital the only active capital. Financial and physical resources are important, but they cannot be transformed without the lever of human capital. The input of human capital grows in value and is becoming the differentiator for the company. Therefore, KANGPUT Technology Development Company must recalibrate to see how that input operates and bring it into balance with all of the other elements, including long-term knowledge management strategy. There should be a power shift. As people will begin to be better able to autonomously gather information, achieve mobility, and initiate connectivity, they will redefine the role and value of their human capital. As a result, they will make new demands on management for more satisfying kinds of tools and techniques for the management of operations. Operations management has to, in a sense, catch up with its workforce and respond with increasing flexibility to obtain the kinds of capabilities and commitments it needs to succeed (Lowson 120). This is a major reversal for operation management, which is used to being able to dictate the terms of employment. Regardless, it is a necessity. Company leadership must come to know better what human capital it needs, not just for today, but also for tomorrow and the day after. It must understand how to rapidly acquire, compensate, grow, and retain it so that it can positively affect its business performance and operating objectives. The result is that it must change its orientation and its basic systems to be at the lead of the knowledge-based enterprise reality. Managing the knowledge and human capital for continuous learning, sharing, and connecting as human beings needs to be part of the daily practice of everyone, from leadership to the frontline of the company (Thierauf 67-78). In the beginning, it should be said that there is no single hardware or software product or combination of the two that can give a comprehensive approach to operations management. If a comprehensive operations management system environment is the ultimate purpose, hardware and software products cannot be utilized alone. Creating a company-wide knowledge management infrastructure needs the integration of many different technologies. For KANGPUT Technology Development Company to open successfully its collective knowledge for companywide use, it is essential not only to develop and use integrated hardware and software technology but also to use the development company’s employees and their related business processes with this knowledge management technology. If KANGPUT Technology Development Company employees are not working in a collaborative environment or if no procedures are in place to share the knowledge, no amount of operations management system technology can change that. For operations management system environment to work well, it must be viewed by company employees at all levels as a strategic means for KANGPUT Technology Development Company to become more competitive and ensure success in the long run. To better comprehend what needs to be done to develop operations management systems effectively, it is best to begin with past and current approaches to the management of operations. This can be done in the form of expert systems and then go on to various levels of operational knowledge acquisition and use—beginning from tactical knowledge to strategic knowledge (Leonard-Barton 156). To acquire and spread narrow- to wide-based operational knowledge for KANGPUT Technology Development Company’s employees, the present knowledge work processes may have to be innovated. This may include reengineering in which knowledge work processes have to be revamped so that knowledge flows freely to every functional unit and subpart that needs it. In order to achieve this ambitious knowledge work redesign, several approaches can be undertaken by operational knowledge management system developers. First, KANGPUT Technology Development Company can change the content of knowledge by expanding what it encompasses in order to better meet desired goals. Second, the company can reorder the composition of work so that company employees may change the concentration of their jobs from information to knowledge. This change may demand the use of more teams of employees in order to share knowledge learned from previous projects, job assignments, and the like. From another side, the change can concentrate on the employment of new networking technology that lends itself to groupware. Using this technology allows employees to have individual knowledge bases and global knowledge bases so that to improve the effectiveness of their operations. Overall, the described changes are quite consistent with reengineering approaches to work and also bolster the efforts of employees using knowledge to make their jobs more effectively. For the purpose to decide which approach to use for reengineering work processes, it is essential for the operations system developers to define which knowledge orientation is required by the company and its employees. Additionally, there are other factors that can influence which direction to choose. These involve the competitive environment, corporate culture, company strategies, problem-finding approach, and the information technology infrastructure. By creating an effective relationship among knowledge work processes, company employees, and the items set forth above, operations system developers can sort out the important factors and set forth ones that are useful in the final design. Operations management systems represent a new business intelligence technology that is useful. Business intelligence technology has become popular because it gives decision makers the opportunity to access and analyze large quantities of information. This information can be used to distil knowledge concerning current and future patterns and trends. Besides, operations management systems are attractive because they give decision makers faster access to desired knowledge which can be presented in new ways that do not require extensive custom programming. In the future of the company they will assist decision makers in making better informed decisions. The point is that decision makers have a wide base of resources at their command to use on problems facing them. Since no one software product can serve the full range of user knowledge needs, there are a host of products available today. Good operations management systems require the cooperation of the vendors, the computer department, and the company’s decision makers and their employees. Most outside vendor products have limitations that will be reached the first time a user says, ‘‘I need †¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢Ã¢â‚¬â„¢. What the person then finds is that the package has provided what is thought to be needed. The vendor can do little to adapt it. So instead of simply acquiring this package, it is necessary to look for one or more software packages that provide capabilities for adapting it to the needs of company decision makers. This naturally leads to the next team that must be created, the computer department. Cooperating with the computer department rather than treating it as an outsider will result in a operations management system much better used to the users’ needs. These computer employees, after all, have been providing much of the information that managers and their employees use. Therefore, they know what some of the decision makers’ needs are already. They will also be the people who will create and implement the system and adapt it to decision makers’ needs.

Television and Media Essay - African Americans and TV Shows :: Exploratory Essays Research Papers

It is estimated that African Americans spend about four to five hours more than the general public on watching television a week. Yet still with these findings, there are only 18 shows that feature an African-American cast or lead character out of the 115 that air on the six major broadcast networks. Even with this imbalanced ratio, there are reasons why there are so few programs featuring leading African Americans, despite the great amount of blacks that are consistent television viewers (Hall 12). It is thought that television producers are just trying to play it safe by sticking to what they know and what they are used to doing. It has been hard for networks to duplicate shows that have satisfied the viewers, such as "The Cosby's", "The Jefferson's", and "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air," Creating this kind of "crossover" audience is essential in a show's success(Hall 12). A more recent show that has been able to gain this success is "The Hughley's". It is said to be "probably one of the best things that's happened this year" according to WB Entertainment President Garth Ancier. This show is said to have "wide spread appeal", and it also helps that it follows right after "Home Improvement"(Hall 12). Although following such a well known show helps out with the viewers, the show is getting more and more popular, and will hopefully cause a change in the way networks associate black television with failure. Even though there is at least one African American in almost every drama ensemble, you don't see any dramas with a full cast of African Americans (Hall 12). It is assumed that if one were to be put on the air, it wouldn't do well because it is something that hasn't been done before. African Americans are automatically associated with being comedians. All of the shows featuring a mostly black cast are comedy shows. This is a reason why networks would stay away from creating a drama with a full cast of African Americans. "The industry has not accepted that people are different", says Louis Carr, executive producer of Black Entertainment Television (BET)(Hall 12). BET has done a lot for African Americans on Television. Not only does it show music videos, but it has an award show where it celebrates and appreciates African American stars.

Scientific Method and Research - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1199 Downloads: 10 Date added: 2017/09/22 Category Advertising Essay Type Argumentative essay Tags: Scientific Essay Did you like this example? 1. Describe what C. Wright Mills meant by the term Sociological Imagination. C. Wright Mills believed you should take a look at oneself and compare it to the bigger picture which is â€Å"Society. † Mills wanted people to view the world as an outsider looking in on the problems of the social order rather than looking into oneself for answers. Mills also believed that individuals take for granted his or her own lifestyle and what they feel should be acceptable within all of society. Belief systems vary throughout the world however, Mills deemed that when the populace was able to take a more analytical examination, discerning from themselves, dealing with societal problems would be more beneficial to all. 2. Describe the similarities and differences between Conflict Theory and the Feminist Perspective. Both Conflict Theory and the Feminist Perspective share a basic â€Å"Tug of War† between different groups of power. Both consist of various bias towards ideas over the way people think as well as economics within society i. . Conflict Theory shows that the poor would be more accountable for a crime than the rich, as within the Feminist Perspective women were not treated equal to men, thus resulting in women being declared as a lower class when compared to men. Conflict Theory demonstrated the poor were belittled equally as within the Feminist Perspective women were disparaged as well. Society dictated that these aforementioned groups were not good enough. The differences between the Conflict Theory and the Feminist Perspective are unambiguous. While the Conflict Theory deals with all of society, economically based, and is uniformity with power, the Feminist Perspective deals only with women, their classlessness, rights, and their social rolls. Conflict Theory does not comprise an inclusion of violence whereas the feminist movement encompasses how women have been abused domestically. 3. Define the term scientific method and the five bas ic steps used in the scientific method. Scientific method is the process of research where a problem is recognized, pertinent information is gathered, and a hypothesis is formulated. This methodology is comprised of trial and error as well as cause effect. The latter of the Scientific Method is a result of experience and/or observation. i. Defining the problem. What is the question or problem you need to solve? Who, what, where, when, which, why or how? ii. Review the literature. Research can be conducted by the use of external sources, i. e. Internet, books, interviews, pictures, focus groups, and historical accounts just to name a few. iii. Formulating the hypothesis. A hypothesis is an educated guess about what you are researching. A hypothesis should be put together in a manner that is helping you to answer your original question. Variables are included within a hypothesis so that the research is done fairly – these variables are usually formed to be independent, de pendent and controlled. iv. Selecting the research, design, and then collecting as well as analyzing data. This means that information that is assembled must be reliable, legitimate, and have a consistent result. Taking in account what the person may be researching, a survey may be taken by asking other people a number of questions. Inquiring to how a person thinks or feels about something particularly can assist in creating charts, graphs, and quantitative (numerical) research. Qualitative research is an observation of what goes on around you within the environment. Once all research data is collected, an analysis and comparison is conducted which in the end will demonstrate the original hypothesis to be factual or false. This procedure may be repeated in order to corroborate the original outcome. v. Developing the conclusion. This is a progression that demonstrates all that the person has learned. If all of the information gathered and reviewed supports the hypothesis, it ma y also lead to other research studies in the future. 4. Discuss the issue of ethics and social research (Give examples to support how research could be harmful to human life. Ethics require explicit standards – simplified, in order to have ethics one needs to know the distinction between right and wrong. Fundamental principles are used while conducting any type of research; these are referred to as the â€Å"Code of Ethics†. This code was formed and pieced together in 1971. This code was assembled in order to protect the person or subject who is part of any research from any harm. The code upholds that any information gathered from the person or subject would be kept confidential. Consent from the person or subject for information gathered would be compulsory as well as acknowledgment of all of the researchers that had helped in the study and recognition of those giving economic support to the research. Nevertheless this can also lead to public disagreements, and long debates as a result of conflicting opinions. The researcher must be impartial toward his or her research so as the results are not tainted and not prejudice. Social Research is a group of people, a think-tank whose sole purpose is to research ideas and gather information that would be relative to society. The ideas that are formulated within this group are introduced to society, and may possibly cause a shift in the way people identify specific situations. The Tobacco Industry. If there is an industry that may be the most dubious of Social Research and the inclusion of Ethics, it would have to be the tobacco industry. The studies conducted by the tobaccos industry in the past have proven to be false – Hearing on the Regulation of Tobacco Products House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health and the Environment (1994) is when seven CEO’s within the tobacco industry claimed that nicotine was non-addictive. Clearly this is an industry that tim e and time again has proven that the â€Å"Code of Ethics† does have the ability to be desecrated.
